The venue is the first domino. It decides your guest cap, your vendor options, your weather risk, and often your entire day's timeline before you've picked a single flower. Get it right and everything downstream gets easier.

Start with style, briefly

Bali's venues generally fall into a few broad categories: clifftop venues with ocean views (dramatic, often windier, typically pricier), beach venues (barefoot, romantic, tide- and weather-dependent), garden and rice-field venues (lush, private, often more affordable), and resort or hotel venues (convenient, full-service). See our dedicated venue style guide on the blog for a deeper breakdown — this page focuses on the practical questions that apply no matter which style you choose.

Guest capacity: read the fine print

Every venue lists a maximum capacity, but that number is rarely the whole story. Ask specifically about capacity for the exact format you're planning — seated dinner is different from standing reception is different from ceremony-only seating. Also ask what happens at the edges of that range, and how late you can confirm final numbers.

The weather backup plan is not optional

This is the single most important operational question you can ask. Ask every venue, in plain terms: what happens if it rains? A good answer names a specific covered space that can hold your full guest count. Ask whether that backup space is included or costs extra to activate, and how much notice they need to make the call.

Noise and curfew rules

Local rules around noise and event hours vary significantly by area, and they're enforced with real consequences. Ask directly: what time does amplified music have to stop, and has the venue had issues with local authorities over noise before.

In-house vendors vs. bring-your-own

Some venues require in-house catering, bar, and decor teams. Others are fully open. Ask upfront which model applies, and whether there are corkage or outside-vendor fees.

What's included vs. what's billed as extra

Ask specifically what's bundled into the base venue fee versus billed separately — tables/chairs, sound and lighting, air conditioning, staffing, parking, bridal prep rooms, rehearsal access, and overtime. Get this itemised in writing.

Site visits and virtual tours

Photos are curated. If you're planning from abroad, ask whether the venue offers a live video walkthrough rather than a pre-recorded promo reel.

Questions to ask before you book

  • What's the actual weather backup space, and is it included in the price?
  • What time does music have to stop, and has the venue had noise issues before?
  • Is catering/bar/decor in-house only, or can we bring outside vendors — and are there fees either way?
  • What's included in the base price, and what's billed as an extra?
  • What's the realistic guest capacity for our specific format?
  • Can we do a live video walkthrough or in-person visit before booking?
  • What's the payment schedule and cancellation policy?
